.set Function

The .set function will modify the value of any key you give it via. parameters.

First of all, you must import the lNV library by using:

const lnv = require('lnv') // We require the 'lNV' package in our code

After importing the library, you must rather configure the default .env file (click for guide), or make a .env file in the root of your project. lNV will assume your .env file is in the root of your project by default, unless configured otherwise. This will be our .env file for this guide:

USER=SulphurDev
PASSWORD=123xyz
EMAIL:robuxtrex@gmail.com

The first thing that we will do is read the 'USER' data so we can compare later:

let user = lnv.get('USER') // We will fetch the value of USER before the modification of the value for comparison.

Now we have the old value of USER, let's console.log it:

console.log(`Before: ${user}`) // Console.log the before value

So, far the expected output should be:

Before: SulphurDev

Now we need to actually edit the .env variable! It's really easy to do this:

lnv.set('USER', '123abc')

This will modify USER's value in the .env file from 'SulphurDev' to '123abc' Though, our old 'user' variable will still contain the original 'SulphurDev', so all we need to do to also fetch the new value is:

let newUser = lnv.get('USER') // Fetch the new value of USER

... and finally let's console.log the new value:

console.log(`After: ${newUser}`)

The expected output should be:

Before: SulphurDev
After: 123abc

Common mistakes

ReferenceError: lnv is not defined

You forgot to import lNV into your code. Note that you must import lNV into every single file that you need to use it in, unless you use module.exports in a file with it imported in, and export the values to the file you need it in.

Ensure that you have the following code at the beginning of the file that you're experiencing issues in:

const lnv = require('lnv')

The .env file is not being modified!

If the .env file is not being modified when requested, it is probably because there is no such match in the .env file to the key you provided in the parameters of the .set() function. Ensure the key you are requesting to view and/or modify the value of indeed exists in the requested .env file. If it is, make sure that you have your .env file in the root of your project, or have the directory configured in the .lnvconfig file.
